Prime Minister John Key has offered support to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard as the country copes with the worst flooding on record.

He has offered her a range of assistance which New Zealand may be able to provide to Queensland.

“New Zealand had a very difficult year in 2010 so we know the types of emotions they are going through and we offer our condolences,” he said during a press conference today.

He acknowledged Australia offered New Zealand a lot of support through the Pike River disaster.

“It is only fitting to do whatever we can to support Queensland in return,” said Mr Key.

The New Zealand response team of 15 people who are currently in Australia will return on January 22 and will be replaced by another team.

“I have also asked the fire service to make a contribution,” said Mr Key. Up to 60 personal may be sent over to help.

“Our thoughts are with our friends in Australia. I know it is a very difficult situation for them and we are doing whatever we can to ease the burden”
