They say a single knight can still be truly memorable and it is certainly true of John Walker - the only knighthood in today's Queen's Birthday Honours.

The award recognises not just an Olympic champion, but someone who has come to know both the highs and lows of physical endeavour.

Sir John has won many accolades, both on the track and in the community.

A year ago he launched the Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation that provides sporting opportunities for youngsters in South Auckland.

He says the knighthood belongs to many people who have helped him be successful in his life.

"I haven't done this by myself, right back from my mum and dad, my coach, the people who used to get me out of bed in the morning to go running,” he says.

The boy from Manurewa won gold at the Montreal Olympics 33 years ago, winning the 1500m track final.

He says he is into his last great race to get kids off the streets, and into sport.

“Kids need inspiration, they've got to be able to follow their dreams, able to follow their heroes,” he says.

“I got mine from reading Snell’s book 'No bugles, no drums’, I read it probably 15 times."

Sir John has suffered from Parkinson’s disease for 15 years, and thanks his wife for keeping him going.

“Without Helen I can't exist. I've had difficulties with Parkinsons, it's the disease I would never wish on anyone."

Lady Walker says at home Sir John is extremely humble and modest about his trophies.

"He doesn't actually have any (medals) on display to be honest, and the kids quite often want to show someone the gold medal, and they've got to forage around to find it,” she says.

Sir John says he believes most young athletes need someone to tap them on the shoulder and encourage them, if they are to achieve greatness.

Middle distance coach, Arch Jelley was the one who tapped Sir John on the shoulder, but today it was the Queen, as she dubbed him Sir John.
