Figures obtained by 3 News show Police Minister Judith Collins is by far the biggest spender when it comes to running her taxpayer-funded car for private use.

And that's on top of the cost of the chauffeur-driven limousine she does much of her travel in.

Ms Collins was out on the job today, travelling in her Crown limousine.

But she's also guzzling plenty of gas in her self-drive car. The minister spends $476 a month - all on the taxpayer.

The minister defends her use of the car, saying “it goes with the territory”.

“Well I don't think that it is [unreasonable] when all the circumstances are taken into account. It goes with the territory. You have to do the job,” she says.

Ms Collins has spent $5721 on petrol for her Mazda 6 in 12 months – which works out at $476 a month.

She is streets ahead of her ministerial colleagues in petrol consumption.

The next closest is Whanau Ora Minister Tariana Turia who spent $268 a month.

Agriculture Minister David Carter is also up there on $218 a month.

“It's consistent with everybody else’s when you look at the full picture,” says Ms Collins.

But some of her colleagues have spent next to nothing on their self-drive vehicles, which must be sitting largely idle.

 - Anne Tolley has spent just $18 a month

- Wayne Mapp only $6 a month

- Nick Smith hasn't spent a cent - but he's got an electric car.

The rules allow ministers' family members and staff to use their cars.

So is it just Ms Collins driving her vehicle?

“All the travel is within the rules - that's all I’m prepared to say on it,” she says.

The rules also warn ministers to exercise "careful judgement" when loaning out their cars.

“It’s within the rules” is a bit of a cliché at Parliament - MPs use it virtually every time they're questioned about their spending.

Ministers like Ms Collins are always telling their departments to tighten their belts - but this mantra doesn't apply to their own perks.

But at least Ms Collins is using her car. The question could be asked of those with low spending - why do they have a car at all?

The rules for family using company vehicles and getting free flights, accomodation etc is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. The fact they are getting 200k + salary a year is enough. They choose this position and career, and they can OBVIOUSLY afford to pay for their family to travel and stay where ever they need to, so come on New Zealand. Are we a democracy or a nation led by corrupt selfish think for them selfers.

Bruce, You should be planning on building your probation Department of Corrections in the business district and not in the Residental area..
The Ministry of Police and Turia should be granted up $300-$500 per petrol per month, I believed they need to feel comfortable dealing with those bad fagats out there..
I agreed with brendon, $100 per week for petrol is nothing..
Stay healthy Bruce, I do know the Department of Corrections and the mistakes they used to make, but I am happy that you comfronted the situation..

Think about it people, she gets a chauffeur to drive her around at her beckon call, she then gets a car for the family and private use, If that is not a blatant misuse of public funds during times of showing restraint nothing is.
We are all aware the perks given to politicians are excessive, but if the National government is demanding the tightening of the belt they too should be expected to lead from the front.
Just listen to her reply she sound like a kid caught with the hand in the lolly jar. If I was a betting man you would think she may have been using the car outside of the criteria and this could come back to haunt her. Shame on you Crusher Collins

Well done Crusher, you hypocrite. I work for the Corrections Department who have faced huge cuts to their budget because of your directive to save money.
You have the cheek to say “It’s just part of the job; you just have to do the work, it's within the rules”. What the hell do you think we do? We continue to lock down prisoners due to your directives to cut costs. With the lack of staff you put our health and safety at risk, here you are giving your car to family members to use, and at our expense. YOU HYPROCRITE

Its not bad considering her job is very impotant and to obey the rules and tighten the belts is a must....The guys that recieved nothing should get bonuses somehow..
