Juno was the little film that could at this year's Oscars, nominated for no less than four Academy Awards including Best Picture, and taking away the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
The film grossed close to $300 million worldwide, and it was not just the box office which felt the Juno love. The pop charts also had a new number one - the Juno soundtrack.
The fresh original sound of Juno can be attributed to Kimya Dawson and her band The Moldy Peaches. And one of her biggest fans was Juno actress Ellen Page.
Director Jason Reitman didn't just like Dawson's music, he based the whole score on her sound, and had his lead actors sing one of them in the film
“Jason kept saying, ‘Millions of people are going to be hearing your stuff’, and I was like come on...he just knew,” says Kimya.
Dawson went from playing small gigs and mixing lo-fi music in her hometown to hanging out with Hollywood celebrities.
When asked how it felt to watch the movie, she says, “It was weird, the first time I saw it I was sitting seats away from Ben Affleck, totally bizarre, this is me, that’s Ben Affleck, and he's listening to me.”
But celebrity moments aside, the unassuming singer/songwriter says life hasn't changed too much.
She still enjoys small intimate gigs, like her Auckland one last night, and with another to come for Wellington fans tonight.
