Still from Juventude

Still from Juventude

Reviewed by Kim Choe

Three lifelong friends reunite for an evening to reminisce about decades gone by. Things have changed from the carefree days they have clung so tightly to – David has money, Ulisses needs it, and Antônio is desperately looking for inspiration.

But the biggest problem for them all is women.

Only copious amounts of alcohol and some very strange flashbacks can help these three slightly dodgy men, all of whom are resigned to the maladies of ageing.

The script is pacy and displays a wry sense of humour, but it suffers from a dearth of visual variation, and would be much better suited to the stage or small screen.

That, coupled with low production values, make it reminiscent of some popular Latin American soap operas – and is best viewed as an extended version of one.

This film played as part of the Latin American Film Festival.
