A Northland teen of Maori and Croation heritage will represent New Zealand at the Miss World beauty pageant in November.

Cody Yerkovich, 18, of Kaitaia, beat 15 other finalists to claim the Miss New Zealand title at Auckland's Sky City Convention Centre.

"I'm really happy...I feel quite privileged to be able to represent Northland and put it on the map," she told the Northern Advocate.

Ms Yerkovich left Kaitaia College last year and is planning to study for a business management degree.

Before the Miss World pageant at a yet to be named venue, Ms Yerkovich will be a guest at the Miss Argentina contest next month, do charity work in the Solomon Islands, and take part in the Model of the World competition in China.

Mike B. obviously you do not appreciate your cultral background as a maori we take pride in our cultral heritage, This is a classic example of how you lose your cultral heritage, this has nothing to do with racism but identifying cultures in there own unique way. the word pakeha has been misinterpretated in to being a racist word against europeans it is just our way of indentifying europeans as you would identify us as maori.

Tarara. You mistakenly believe that race is tied to culture when this is not always the truth. If she had been European would they have taken the time to say she was Irish/welsh?
Moari are so caught up in what race a person is these days we are all NZ’rs why can’t we just be happy with that.
If this had been a story about a crime would the race of the person be advertised then?

Tarara is an unfortunate example of ignorance and racism. Tarara assumes all "Pakeha" (by which I assume means non-Maori/Pacific Islander) do not identify with a culture, which is, to be frank, stupid.

Her racial heritage is who she is, her genetic makeup,Theres a lot of examples of maori/croatian beauties from the north and is a unique mix, with both ethnic backgrounds having rich cultural backgrounds,If you dont realise the importance of your culture you may as well be pakeha

What does her racial heritage have to do with anything?
