The death of a male kakapo on Codfish Island, off the west coast of Stewart Island, has capped off a disappointing season for those involved in the birds' recovery programme.

The dead kakapo was an older bird known as Wayne-Bo, who had fathered several chicks.

He suffered a wound to the chest although how he got the injury is not known.

Other kakapo are not expected to breed this year due to a lack of Rimu fruit which triggers their mating behaviour.
