Kapa haka festival moves to Christchurch

3News NZ

The country's biggest kapa haka festival is heading to Christchurch in 2015.

The biannual Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival is regarded as the world's largest celebration of Maori performing arts and attracts around 30,000 participants and visitors.

Waitaha Cultural Council chairperson Ranui Ngarimu says Hagley Park has been chosen as the venue as it can accommodate large crowds of people.

"We're planning on it being predominantly in Hagley Park," says Ms Ngarimu. "They council are very, very well-experienced in holding events in Hagley Park."

Hagley Park has recently been the venue for the Earthquake memorial service and will host the upcoming the Ellerslie Flower Show.
