One of the biggest rumours of this year's Comic-Con has been confirmed: Kiwi actor Karl Urban is the new Judge Dredd.

The Wellington-born actor told TV3 movie show Reel Late with Kate that he had officially been given the role, saying: "Yes, it's true, I am the Law". He added that he was "thrilled to bits" about landing the role.

Urban's star has been on the rise, getting rave reviews for his latest outing as Bones in Star Trek, after high profile outings opposite Matt Damon in The Bourne Supremacy and as Eomer in the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Return of the King. He has just finished shooting Red with Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman.

The new Judge Dredd is being described as a reboot of the 1995 movie starring Sylvester Stallone and will be shot in 3D.

According to IMDb.com, Vantage Point director Pete Travis is slated to helm, with 28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland penning the screenplay.

Finally!! Hopefully a decent re-make of a terrible version that the yanks did way back then!! Karl did Doom some years back with the rock; and he did a great job of that character. Lets hope he can do the same with this one. Only wish they come up with a decent story this time!

Huge Dredd fan.

Mixed feelings about this.

The story outline sounds awful - Dredd stuck in a block for 110 mins. No scope to the story. Lame. However, Urban could be a good/great Dredd. I just feel the story is wrong and won't do him justice.

Perhaps the writer, Alex Garland, can see some sense and change elements of the story, spice it up a bit. Dredd is more than Die Hard or Escape From New York in Mega-City 1 block. Time to see sense, Alex, and change it. Irrespective of the plot, I wish Urban good luck. Dredd's a great character. As they say, "HE IS THE LAW!" :)
