The 23-year-old who died after allegedly being stabbed in the neck at a Kawerau house was Gareth Lardell Kaipara.
Name suppression for Mr Kaipara was lifted when the 31-year-old man accused of his murder appeared in Whakatane District Court on Wednesday.
The accused man has kept name suppression and been remanded in custody for a psychiatric report to be carried out before his next court appearance on January 30.
He was originally charged with assault, but police upgraded the charge to murder on Tuesday.
Mr Kaipara was found by police after they were called to a house in Holyoake Crescent in Kawerau at about 8pm last Thursday.
Paramedics were unable to save him and he died at the house.
Three adults and a nine-year-old boy were there at the time.
