The Mayor of Kawerau is welcoming a multimillion dollar boost for education in the town while Labour is lamenting it.

The new secondary school will open its doors in 2013, a year after the closure of the town's college and intermediate schools.

This afternoon, Labour has released a statement criticising Education Minister Anne Tolley's handling of the issue, accusing National of carrying out a "shonky consultation process".

After a long battle with the minister Mayor Malcolm Campbell now says the community must move forward:

“All I want to do now is get on with it. And to be fair to the teaching staff and to the children of the community it really does need to have some finality put in to and get on with it.

$6 million has been set aside for the new school.

The existing college and Intermediate schools now have 28 days to respond, before a final decision is made.
