A disastrous run in his sole semi-final run down the Lee Valley whitewater course has ended Tauranga paddler Mike Dawson's hopes of making the Olympic canoe slalom final.

Dawson, who qualified for the last 15 in the K1 by finishing eighth in the heats, missed two gates to finish last.

He needed to produce a top-10 run to make the final.

Dawson, ranked 51 in the world, got out of shape after going through gate 18, drifting down the course and was unable to get through gates 19 and 20.
