Wellington's Gareth Kean swam the fifth fastest time in the world this year to win the 100m backstroke at the New South Wales championships in Sydney.
The 20-year-old went under the qualifying standard for the London Olympics in clocking 54.17sec on the final night of the championships on Sunday.
Kean, who was second in the 50m and 200m events, was the second New Zealand swimmer to go under the Olympic mark at the championships after Lauren Boyle qualified for the 800m freestyle.
Southland's Natalie Wiegersma was a second off qualifying for London in finishing third in the 200m individual medley.
Swimming New Zealand's Rushdee Warley was happy with the team's showing with many of the swimmers in the middle of training and not in race shape.
"This was a good opportunity to assess the current state of training and it kick-starts the final preparation phase for the Olympic trials in six weeks time.
"It was also an excellent chance for some good and hard racing which was invaluable," he said.
The Olympic trial takes place in Waitakere from March 25-30.
