Love them or hate them, you can spot a Kevin Smith movie a mile away.

Now the man who directed Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Zack and Miri Make a Porno has announced he is almost done with the movie business.

In 1994 Kevin Smith broke through with his film Clerks.

He made it for just $30,000 but it went on to make $3 million.

"I’m the kind of artist where if you can't say something new or if you're not bringing something original to the party, step away.

“Let the youth in there, let someone else in there to bring something new to it.”

So he is retiring. It comes after the director declared open warfare on film critics when they panned his 2011 offering Cop Out.

"You've been telling me how I’m not good at my job and I’m irrelevant, well no one gives a fuck what you say. No one cares about critics. Oh my good, the emo bomb that blew up on the internet after that."

Smith's film hockey movie Hit Somebody is due to be released at Sundance next year.
