PM John Key

PM John Key

A week after the Rena ran aground Prime Minister John Key was back in Tauranga.

Campbell Live took the opportunity to ask him if New Zealand is well enough equipped to cope with an oil spill like this.

And why was no one able to start pumping oil off the boat earlier?

My question is, why are the people including the truck drivers operating machinery are not wearing face masks if what they are handling&shifting is toxic waste now?... also shouldnt those trucks transporting it be displaying "TOXIC" signs while transporting it to dump?....

Appalled by pathetic John Key & Marine NZ for not responding quickly. The situation required urgent action, while the sea was calm. But NZrs were left to watch the nightmare slowly unfold. John Key - you've shattered people's livelihood & you've destroyed countless birds & sea creatures. Your lack of action is unforgivable & your insipid voice is unbearable. Interesting to read Sharon's words about his contradiction - AND his body language did say everything, but he is a professional liar...

Not surprising to see the supporters, the ones of the minority who support the labour party, jumping on the ‘national to blame’ bandwagon …. Of cause this is all Keys fault, bad response, should have been better prepared bla bla bla … I can understand the locals emotions, I’d be pretty upset straight away, even angry. But when you actually listen to the experts and think, the response has been thoughtful and professional. But of course some people are just too blinkered to see that … And criticism and analysis by Campbell … well he should stick to interviewing people who grow funny shaped vegetables, or other topics he can handle …

Hi JC, a question I would like asked of the government and Key: We have been told that the national government reviewed their oil spill response plans after the gulf oil disaster in the US in 2010, surely a major component of this would have been liability of clean up cost (a huge issue in the US oil spill, like any other oil spill anywhere in the world, apart from NZ it seems), so why was the cap on the amount of clean up liability retained? Could it be with John Key's and national's strong desire to attract international oil companies to deep sea drilling in NZ, it was decided that any removal of this cap would be seen as less attractive to international oil companies, so a deliberate decision was taken to leave the cap in place, instead leaving the NZ taxpayer and environment exposed to an oil spill and associated vast clean up costs? I find it hard to believe a government could be so incompetent as not to realise clean up cost would not be an issue when conducting a review of oil spill response plans! It is clear that either this disaster of a decision was in fact taken or that Key and the national government were grossly incompetent in the matter of the review. Either way this spill for me has proved that Key and national cannot not be trusted with NZ's precious natural heritage, let us not forget in the same review they also refused to consider and accept the need of an oil spill response vessel.

Our Navy and Air force have Helicopters witch are able to lift containers. In this 1 1/2 weeks, they could take the most containers of them from the ship, but it looks like they wait till the sea do it.

The only reason John Key said the Government wasn't taking control of this catastrophe was because Maritime NZ was very capable and had lots of expertise so it wasn't necessary for them to take over from the experts. Now, if you watch 2 mins into this video he says that Maritime NZ "don't have the best experts in the world. They have their own small group of people....who wouldn't be the most up to date with ability and capability". Please, John Campbell, pick him up on this. This episode is being very poorly managed.
