Prime Minister John Key has suggested Rodney Hide's days as a minister may be numbered.
The ACT leader will present his case to cabinet and outline why he's willing to give up his role as a minister if Maori get seats on Auckland's super city council.
A final decision will be made then and if it goes against Mr Hide, it will be his last cabinet meeting as minister.
Mr Key says he respects Mr Hide's position and it's the sort of thing that can happen with MMP governments.
"He's effectively said he'd resign as minister of local government and from there on in it would be up to me as Prime Minister to determine," Mr Key says. "But lets cross that bridge if we ever come to it."
The decision won't tip the Government over, but if Mr Hide loses and resigns, his ego will go with it. As Mr Key's coalition partner, Mr Hide's departure will make the next two years interesting.
