Prime Minister John Key has suggested Rodney Hide's days as a minister may be numbered.

The ACT leader will present his case to cabinet and outline why he's willing to give up his role as a minister if Maori get seats on Auckland's super city council.

A final decision will be made then and if it goes against Mr Hide, it will be his last cabinet meeting as minister.

Mr Key says he respects Mr Hide's position and it's the sort of thing that can happen with MMP governments.

"He's effectively said he'd resign as minister of local government and from there on in it would be up to me as Prime Minister to determine," Mr Key says. "But lets cross that bridge if we ever come to it."

The decision won't tip the Government over, but if Mr Hide loses and resigns, his ego will go with it. As Mr Key's coalition partner, Mr Hide's departure will make the next two years interesting.

Prime Minister John Key has suggested Rodney Hide's days as a minister may be numbered....maybe john key should look at his days, for not giving maori sets and for not listing to the peoples no vote on the smacking law,the priministers day may be numbered, you lose my vote!

Of course Maori can have a seat on the council; but let's see them voted on. The whole idea is someone puts him or herself up for election and goes out and gets some votes. That's the whole idea of democracy or aren't we living in a democracy ? Get rid off Maori seats, Chinese seats, Pakeha seats and let the people actually vote for them. It's cheaper in the long run and everyone is accountable for the successes and failures. We have no time for racists and every time Maori are treated differently, racism rears it's ugly head. One man one vote period !

As expected there's a lot of racism being written here. If you have to consult with Maori (as under the principles of the Treaty of Waiatangi) then why not have them on the council, as a direct link rather than having to go to them on every issue. Makes logical sense. By the way I'm a seventh generation Pakeha.

This is totally amazing,.Pre election John Key campaigned on the promise to get rid of the childish duplicity of Maori seats, and here we repeating the same old nonsense on the new Auckland council John you are a back slider.

Sounds like a great fire sale is about to begin...many of Auckland city's assets will be in foreign ownership before we know it...one major reason why they dont want any Maori seats. And good old National, supporting terrorist America in their childish wars based on pure bull. Rodney Hide is just the scapegoat...
