Prime Minister John Key is to appear on David Letterman's Late Show when he is in New York this September.
The appearance has been set up by tourism officials who are using the opportunity to sell New Zealand to the world.
Letterman pulls in America’s hottest celebrities, politicians and newsmakers and as the top rating week-night talk show host, he has a world wide audience in the millions.
His style is funny, warm engaging, and he takes the mickey out of anyone.
The Prime Minister is travelling to New York to address the United Nations.
3 News understands officials in the US have spent months negotiating Key's appearance.
On the same day in New York, Key will also ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
Key says “it could be quite a good afternoon”.
It is also understood Key will likely have an informal meeting with President Barack Obama at a cocktail function in New York. It will be the first time the two have met.
But it's the Letterman appearance that has Government officials excited right now.
John Key is also the Tourism Minister and this is his opportunity to sell New Zealand to millions of viewers worldwide - no pressure.
