Prime Minister John Key's disparaging comments about Hungarian troops in Afghanistan are being described as a diplomatic blunder.

Following the deaths at the weekend of two New Zealand soldiers in Bamyan province, Mr Key on Monday questioned the competence of Hungarian forces in neighbouring Baghlan province.

The soldiers were shot by insurgents who apparently infiltrated from Baghlan province, where the Hungarians operate.

"They don't go out at night - they might when they're in Budapest but not when they're in Afghanistan," Mr Key said.

He revealed New Zealand troops were going to patrol beyond the Bamyan border because there was "a gap" in security arrangements.

Hungary's defence ministry says Mr Key's comments were "inappropriate" and "lack the spirit of comradeship and union that we would like to preserve".

Labour's foreign affairs spokesman, Phil Goff, says it was a gratuitous insult.

"John Key's comments that Hungarians would go out at night in Budapest but not on patrol in Afghanistan has understandably been seen by them as questioning their courage," he said on Friday.

"Hungary has lost seven of its soldiers in Afghanistan in the difficult Baghlan province... if John Key has genuine issues about how they are doing their job he should have raised it directly with them and in confidence."

Mr Goff says "publicly slanging them off" in the way Mr Key did has caused anger and resentment against New Zealand and undermined the relationship between Kiwis and their allies.

"Frankly, it's stupid," he said.

@ Gary, you missed my point, I said Wikileaks confims what JK said, and then you said JS had something to say on it. I never mentioned it isn't a NZ war, we are tidying up US stuff, it is costing us millions, etc etc. I am sure the article was about the Hungarian tropps not performing, I went looking at found evidence to back it up and found it. Wars/pushing beliefs will continue to happen until further notice.

Hungarians are more intelligent than kiwis.
Hungarians just happen to be in a little US-Zion puppet state now to get back at the Russians. So they go to Afghan and mouth the lies of WMD and "reconstruction" but theyr not dumb enough to go on night patrols. They realise that in 14 years noone will give a fig about Ghan just as we dont give a fig about Vietnam or Korea or malaya or ..

@Dave Jones you miss the point yet again. I am not interested in finger pointing or bragging rights about who has the best tac-tics or who has killed the most people. I only view this on facts, history and actual events. It is not and never was NZ war. We are now tidying up for US. It is costing NZ Millions and for what exactly?? After the army pull out life goes on and back to what Afghans and Muslims create for themselves based on their history and beliefs. Countries like US and many in Europe always try and force their beliefs onto others which is wrong especially when it is at the expense of many peoples lives.

I see the name calling is back from the looney left.

Why is it when several different people have different oppinions and dont support idiots like David/James - they must be the same poster?

But when several different idiots like David/James post support, its popular support?

Wake up and smell the coffee!

That David first thinks of child molesting, it really does help define the individual. I wouldn't want David around ANY children, even labour supporters children!

On one side we have people wanting more accountability from Keys, and then the same people demand less accountability for NZ spending on welfare/social policy? No doubt they probably believe in money trees, the tooth fairy, and taniwha!

Lets talk some policy, and ideas to help NZ without spending ever more money. Oh wait, someone with not enough brains to steal their own shoes, have to name call as they are not capable of reasoned debate.

This debate should be about defence like our armed forces, Afghanistan, and International Diplomacy.

@ Gary, So JS is defending the way the Hungarian Forces Operate in Afghnaistan? If so put a link up, I can't find a thing about him saying good things about them.

@Cheryl/Chris JOhn Keys government is introducing legislation that says withholding financial help from a child is child abuse. His government also recently introduced legislation saying that he could cut benefits by up to 50 percent for non compliance. economic abuse is withholding funds from a person (for whatever reason). So that John Key is an abuser is undeniable... economic abuse is economic abuse. However when it comes to hungary... John Key is the minister of tourism and supposedly a seasoned politician... not a child. He should grow up and act with a little dignity... something I have never seen him do.

Good on him for saying it like it is, especially since our boys are pulling their own weight. Cowardice, like being politically correct, has no place in a combat zone and it has to be brought out. All you idiots making your snide too good comments, living in a plush environment provided for ultimately by the sacrifices of tough soldiers. I wonder how you would feel if your son or daughter were in Afghanistan. Goff makes me sick for taking political pot shots instead of unequivocally supporting the cold facts of life our fantastic PRT have to deal with.
