A Chinese student in Auckland has been jailed for at least 16 years for murdering another Chinese student, known as Kiko.

The motive was money.

Yongxin Li planned to rob and kill someone, so he chose a friend.

The body of Jiayi Li - known as Kiko - was found with 22 stab wounds in the boot of her car in Hamilton.

Yongxin initially denied being involved in Kiko's murder, but changed his plea to guilty earlier this year and has today been sentenced to 16 years in the Auckland High Court.

Two other men, one of them also charged with murder, claim they are not guilty and will stand trial in September.
