From the sky, it is a perfect Pacific atoll. From the beach, it is a land of squalor. Overloaded with slums and squatters, Tarawa's people have simple needs.
Tarawa's 50,000 people have no clean water and no sewerage system.
They come from the outer islands for a better life, but there are no jobs, nor money - just problems.
Its rates of domestic abuse and infant death are some of the worst in the world.
With 33 islands barely above sea-level, climate change is Kiribati's fear. However, the real danger is society falling apart first.
The island is at a point of no return. Some of the people must be moved back to the outer islands. But some of these people don't want to go, and the outer islands are not ready for them either.
