The New Zealand bidders for the Crafar farms, led by Sir Michael Fay, are promising to match a raft of conditions included in the Chinese deal.
The Chinese group agreed to public walking access through areas of the land and the creation of new jobs. It also offered a historic pa site to the Crown.
The Government says because Kiwi buyers don’t have to go through an approval process, it can’t “ask” Mr Fay’s group to match those conditions.
The Kiwi bid is about $30 million less than the amount offered by the Chinese.
