New Zealand swimmer Matthew Stanley won't be progressing any further in the 400m freestyle at the Olympic Games after a swim well outside his personal best.
The 20-year-old from Matamata, New Zealand's first swimmer in the water at London, was fifth in his 400m freestyle heat in a time of 3 minutes 49.44 seconds.
Stanley was about a length behind his opponents for most of his heat and couldn't pick the pace up in the final 100m, finishing more than two seconds behind Canadian heat winner Ryan Cochrane.
It was nearly two seconds outside his personal best, set at the New Zealand championships in March.
Stanley's time was 14th fastest in the heats.
