A New Zealand-born Australian has been arrested by police in Bali after allegedly caught carrying five packets of Cocaine.
Angus McCaskill, 57, was arrested at Pepito Supermarket, near an airport in the south of Bali. He is being held by police for interrogation.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs says he’s an Australian who has been a long-term resident in Bali.
The Department of Foreign Affairs also says it has been providing assistance to the man’s family in New Zealand.
It is thought he was born here and went to Lytton High School in Gisborne.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs told 3 News they hadn’t heard of a New Zealander being arrested in Bali, but it’s possible he could have been travelling on an Australian passport.
The Australian Consulate-General in Bali is providing the man with consular assistance.
In a statement released to 3 News, Balinese police have said they don’t yet know whether he was a drug user or dealer and are yet to charge him with an offence.
The arrest follows the infamous conviction of Australian Schapelle Corby, who is now serving a 20-year prison sentence in Indonesia for attempting to smuggle marijuana in her luggage.
She was convicted in 2005 and isn’t due to be released until 2024.
The Australian “Bali 9” were caught carrying more than 8kg of heroin and face the death penalty for their crimes.
