Sean Kenzie was on holiday in Thailand when he was injured in a motorbike accident

Sean Kenzie was just a few days into his holiday in Thailand when he was hit while riding a motorbike.

He has no memory of it.

“Two punctured lungs and broken ribs. I'm not sure if his jaw was partially ripped off but they've had to sew it back on,” says Mr Kenzie’s brother Kane.

Mr Kenzie has just been taken out of intensive care in a Phuket hospital after receiving quality but expensive treatment that he assumed would be paid for by insurance.

“He paid almost double to be covered for everything, he kept yelling at me ‘I'm covered’,” says his girlfriend.

Mr Kenzie's family says he wasn't told of a clause in his insurance policy saying motorbike or moped riding wasn't covered, unless he'd paid an extra premium.

Insurers Cover More won't help with his rising medical bills.

“He's had operation to save his life, now needs operation to fix his life,” says Kane Kenzie.

Kane Kenzie says his sick mother has had calls from the hospital asking for money - the bill is already more than $15,000.

“They won't operate further till they get the money and we have four days to come up with it,” he says.

The Insurance Council says Mr Kenzie's predicament shows people must check their policy before taking travel cover. That is especially important for those taking an extra risk like hiring a motorbike or doing adventure sports.

I made a donation when it first happened- So did many others. Did that help at all?? What became of it? i could possibly donate a little more- perhaps someone could post it up again on facebook etc. If a 150 Kiwis gave 10 bucks each, it would help him out greatly!! I'd like to think that if a foreigner happened to land themselves in NZ Hosp that they wouldn't be turned away, but be shown that kiwi's have a heart and its NOT all about the money all of the time..Why on EARTH is it so expensive anyway? plastic surgery costs less than that!!!!

I do feel sorry for anyone who has a motorbike crash but come on!! This guy has rented a bike in a risky place without any insurance and is now facing up to the consequences and his family are in effect looking for a hand out. He got a cheap insurance policy and they do not cover much at all. Read before you buy is an obvious thing to do with any insurance. I just checked Travel More policy and there is no fine print- it's clear as a bell, NO MOTORBIKES!! As for being refused treatment in the private hospital, imagine if some foreigner went into a Kiwi private hospital with any problem and stated that they could/would not pay the bill, they would be out of there in seconds. The pubic hospital system in Thailand is not luxurious but is what millions of Thai people deal with every year.

This just proves how transparent this insurance company is. Looking out for themselves rather than the people that matter. To the insurance company - Look, stop hiding under the red tape and give the care that is needed, show us that you do care about the people rather than the money you are trying to save. I just hope the value of our Kiwi men and women are worth more to you than the profit you make.

What we all need to do when we take out travel and other insurance is insist to get a list of exactly what we are not covered for, just a simply worded list eg,Your policy does not cover you for; 1.Motor bike riding, 2.Scuba diving, 3.Elephant riding, 4 Sky Diving etc and the Policy could state that they will be covered if an extra amount is paid. Then at least people will know exactly where they stand.

This is my second cousin- His Mum - my cousin Nadine, does not need this. What is the point of insurance?? I live in Perth and will be following this up on this side. These people should be made accountable- if he was on an elephant/ photo with tiger etc and got hurt i assume that would not be covered either. No cover for accidental explosions caused by bombs? No cover for a person getting attacked?? Shame on you ""Travel Less" The least you could do is get this boy home. After this exposure, I doubt there will be much business coming your way

Actually an extra risk IS riding a motorbike especially in Thailand. I have been to Phuket and there are some extremely dangerous areas to be riding in, especially during wet conditions. It's the same in Vietnam (where I saw two moped crashes in the short time I was there). I do believe Sean could have been more vigilant with checking his policy details. It's really unfortunate for Sean and all his loved ones, good luck with your fundraising.

@ Val King: Perhaps if you understood the reason behind ACC you would not make such an asinine comment. ACC was introduced to bar tort action for compensation so if you remove coverage for foreigners they will be able to sue in Court again.

The Insurance Industry insist that we have a "duty of disclosure" when we buy insurance. That means they can simply cancel our policy if we havn't told them everything. When will this industry come clean and make sure that their policies are worded so we can understand all their little loopholes and exclusions? Come on Insurers, you also have a duty of disclosure to your customers! Honour your marketing promises.
