Sean Kenzie was just a few days into his holiday in Thailand when he was hit while riding a motorbike.
He has no memory of it.
“Two punctured lungs and broken ribs. I'm not sure if his jaw was partially ripped off but they've had to sew it back on,” says Mr Kenzie’s brother Kane.
Mr Kenzie has just been taken out of intensive care in a Phuket hospital after receiving quality but expensive treatment that he assumed would be paid for by insurance.
“He paid almost double to be covered for everything, he kept yelling at me ‘I'm covered’,” says his girlfriend.
Mr Kenzie's family says he wasn't told of a clause in his insurance policy saying motorbike or moped riding wasn't covered, unless he'd paid an extra premium.
Insurers Cover More won't help with his rising medical bills.
“He's had operation to save his life, now needs operation to fix his life,” says Kane Kenzie.
Kane Kenzie says his sick mother has had calls from the hospital asking for money - the bill is already more than $15,000.
“They won't operate further till they get the money and we have four days to come up with it,” he says.
The Insurance Council says Mr Kenzie's predicament shows people must check their policy before taking travel cover. That is especially important for those taking an extra risk like hiring a motorbike or doing adventure sports.
