Some of New Zealand’s top designers will gather in Auckland today for the 2012 Best Design Awards.
Finalists include a humane possum trap, and a small breathing device for critically ill babies.
Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce says the economic downturn has been a great incentive for creativity.
“I think it’s particularly strong in this economic environment because companies are looking for an edge that gives them an opportunity to actually get out there and be more competitive in the marketplace,” he says.
Mr Joyce says the market will adapt to accommodate those who have lost jobs from recent cuts.
