Kimberley Smith's 8th place finish in last night’s London marathon has seen a 29-year-old record finally broken.
Smith broke marathon queen Allison Roe's New Zealand record by eight seconds - a record set at the New York Marathon way back in 1981.
Roe, who set the New Zealand record of two hours 25 minutes and 29 seconds, says Smith has a bright future.
“It's been a long time coming and it's just fantastic for New Zealand and it's just wonderful that Kimberley has managed to do it, she's got a fantastic future,” says Roe.
Smith was more than three minutes slower than the winner in London and the Beijing Olympian knows she has to break 2hrs 25 for the marathon or return to running 10km.
Roe says the runner is still relatively new to the sport.
“I believe it's only her second marathon so she's quite a novice and she's got a long way to go winning a big one will be her next challenge,” she says.
