KiwiRail workers at Dunedin's Hillside Workshop have been told between 40 and 44 jobs are being axed.

Staff packed into a local hall in June to pass a resolution, calling for the Government to stop the redundancies which has failed.

A downturn in work has been cited as the reason for the redundancies.

Workers say the job cuts could have been avoided if KiwiRail had awarded the plant a contract for Auckland’s new rolling stock.

Once again the government is hell bent on on cutting jobs. John Key stated that he he wants people off the unemployment benefit, yet he is giving our work to overseas companies. 44 jobs to go at Hillside in Dunedin is just another example of the arrogance of this government, with no thought at all to the economic impact of their decision. No jobs, no income tax being paid, no gst on goods purchased, and millions of dollars going to the Chinese economy and not the New Zealand economy. WHERE IS THE SENSE IN THIS!!!
