During the probation period, new employees can't claim unfair dismissal if they are sacked

Most people are in favour of extending the 90-day employment probation period to all businesses, an opinion poll has shown.

The probation period currently covers businesses with 19 or fewer employees, and the Government will soon bring in legislation extending it to all businesses.

Unions say it will affect 400,000 workers - the number who change jobs each year - and are fighting the Government.

During the probation period, new employees can't claim unfair dismissal if they are sacked.

The Government says it creates opportunities because businesses are prepared to give people a chance, which they wouldn't risk without a probation period, but unions say employers exploit workers and some have been sacked for no reason at all.

The TV One poll questioned 1000 voters and 60 percent said they supported extending it to all businesses, while 36 percent said it shouldn't be extended.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent.

Employers have rights too. An unsatisfactory employee can drive a company bankrupt which helps nobody. If I were looking for work, I would be pleased to have the opportunity to be "evaluated" by a prospective employer. The "unions" want to bight the hand that feeds them.

The plan needs some form of control so that it is not open to abuse.People dismissed should not be disadvantaged by an employers decision to terminate, particularly if no adequate reasons are provided.A 3 month trial leads me to suspect a number of employers will take on staff to cover a seasonal peak period, then dismiss them aferwards...

You got to be joking!! no employment rights for workers for 90-day this takes New Zealand back to the days were rightwing cotton farmers in American,s south could bring in slave labour to pick cotton crop,s. Any short term workers say one think wrong like the word "wages" they could be in fear of there job.

This is likely to be no problem to the majority of workers as not many employers hire people just so they can sack them. If you are so bad you get the sack in most cases you dont want the job bad enough anyway.
