The Kiwi accent topped the British, Australian and South African accents

The Kiwi accent topped the British, Australian and South African accents

Forget French or Spanish, a survey of over 300 Kiwis shows we like our own accent the best.

The survey was commissioned by hearing solutions company Phonak to raise awareness about Hearing Awareness Week. The survey found out what sounds respondents loved and hated and the accents they found the most romantic and the least attractive.

Almost 30 percent of respondents said they think the Kiwi accent sounds the best, followed by the British-English accent, 25 percent, and Irish at third, 24 percent.

The least preferred was Australian, with 24 percent of respondents believing this to be the worst accent to hear English in, followed closely by Cockney, 23 percent, and South African, 22 percent.

When it comes to foreign languages, however, the survey revealed strong preferences for those of the European variety.

When asked which foreign language sounds the most romantic, the favourite was French at, 53 percent, followed by Italian, 23 percent, and Spanish, 12 percent.

Japanese, Mandarin and Arabic trailed behind with less than 1 percent each.

David Crowhen, Head Audiologist for Phonak New Zealand says the survey was a different way of raising awareness about Hearing Awareness Week, which begins on Sunday March 27.

“Hearing loss affects a wide range of people across the social spectrum – more than 400,000 in New Zealand,” says Mr Crowhen.

“Yet, most people wait 10 years to do something about it”.

“Phonak strives to help all people are able to hear, understand and fully enjoy life's rich landscapes of sound, with the help of our hearing aids we hope more people will take care of their hearing and see a professional if they think it isn’t as good as it should be.”

@MarkPoint... Its U-ka-le-le Oo-car-le-le If you’re trying to make a point about pronunciation the least you could do is pronounce right it yourself. It’s a Hawaiian word, not American, ie just because the country was seized by America by force doesn’t make there language American. It is still Native Kanaka Maoli (that’s the indigenous name for the people of the Hawaii Islands in case you didn’t know that either)

The Kiwi accent is atrocious. It actually hurts my ears that Kiwi's cannot open their mouths and speak properly -- instead of speaking with their necks & lower jaw. I have never heard TV presenters speaking with an American accent - CAPSH-YULE, and ook-a-lay-lee are definitely not American...you would say CAP-sull, and YU-ka=laylee....the grammar on TV is also quite bad. It's as if Kiwi's cannot speak, spell, or produce a proper sentence...nothing sexy about that. "It will keep you full FOR LONGER...." For LONGER THAN WHAT? This is not proper grammar -- When I hear this, I just cringe completely -- but this lazy horrible speech is accepted by none other than Kiwi's -- ask the rest of the population what they think about it, and you might be surprised that it isn't so great to listen to.

Wouldn't you expect Kiwis to prefer a Kiwi accent? Would be far more interesting reading if a broader range of the population was surveyed.
