Knife carrying-man attacks police officer from behind

A West Auckland man faces a range of charges following an attack on a police officer and an alleged rape this morning.

About 1am, police attended an address in Te Atatu, where a woman said she had been raped.

While she spoke to police, the alleged rapist, carrying a knife, attacked an officer from behind.

The 22 year-old unemployed man will appear in the Waitakere District Court today charged with two counts of threatening to kill two police officers, one count of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one charge of rape

The officer was treated in hospital for injuries to his hands and head.
