Auckland Zoo will be served up a slice of the 1980s tonight with a concert by Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley and soul singer Paul Young.
With 60 years in showbiz between them you might think Young and Hadley have seen it all, but meeting two elephants was 'gold'.
"I've never been this close to a wild animal," says Hadley.
Kicking off their New Zealand tour, Hadley and Young will play tonight at Auckland Zoo, raising money for a wildlife park in Sumatra.
Along with Duran Duran and Culture Club, Spandau Ballet and Young ruled the 1980s. Boys wanted to lay their hats just like Young and girls wanted to be head-over-heels and toe-to-toe with their idols.
A recent survey said the 1980s was the best decade to grow up in – the two singers agree.
"If you want to throw an 80s party, I realise it's easy to dress up like Boy George and Adam Ant, but if you want to throw a 90s party, what do you do?" asks Young.
"We did wear some ridiculous clothes though, I've got to say," adds Hadley.
And then there were the hairstyles.
"Mullets," says Hadley. "Everybody had them. I've just got a shorter version of the same thing."
Many people have told them they had their first kiss to one of their records.
"I get a lot of army people, navy, anybody who travels abroad," says Young, "and has to work with a relationship that's going to keep them away from home. They say those records mean a lot to them."
For now they have only got the local elephant's affections to worry about.
