New Zealand golfer Lydia Ko is through to the last 16 at the US amateur women's championship in Ohio.

World No 1 ranked amateur Ko won her second-round match against former US junior champion Amy Anderson 3 and 2 at The Country Club course in Cleveland.

The 15-year-old from Auckland was knocked out at the equivalent stage of the tournament last year and history looked like repeating when she trailed Anderson 1-down through nine holes.

However, birdies on the 12th and 13th holes put Ko in front and she sealed victory with quality putts on the 15th and 16th greens.

Her third round opponent is French 18-year-old Celine Boutier. Ko qualified second for the match play element of the championship after two rounds of qualifying.

She beat American Amy Beth Simanton 4 and 3 in the first round of matches.

The championship will be decided in a 36-hole final on Monday (NZT).
