Manchester City says captain Vincent Kompany has signed a six-year contract extension with the Premier League champions.

The Belgium central defender guided Man City to its first league title in 44 years and has played 161 games for the club since joining from German side Hamburg in 2008.

Kompany says "we have laid the foundations and now we need to win more" and "if we do that then we can become one of the most successful clubs for a long time to come."

City kicks off the defence of its Premier League title on Aug. 19 against newly promoted Southampton.
