Communication errors are being blamed for the transporting of dangerous cargo on an Air New Zealand passenger flight.

The Civil Aviation Authority has released its interim report into the incident, where cannisters were illegally transported on the flight from Auckland to Vancouver in 2009.

The preliminary investigation finds fault with the Royal New Zealand Air Force who incorrectly labelled, categorised and prepared the cargo for shipping.

CAA Director Graeme Harris says the full report will make recommendations to improve systems and ensure this type of incident doesn't happen again.
