Auckland Councillor Cameron Brewer says it is very disappointing the Labour Party’s Auckland Central candidate Jacinda Ardern has deliberately ignored official advice around election hoardings.

On Tuesday Auckland Council’s senior lawyer Wendy Brandon advised candidates that election signs are allowed up from 12.00am, Monday 26 September – two calendar months prior to the 26 November general election. Signs up around Auckland today breach the Electoral (Advertisements of a Specified Kind) Regulations 2005 bylaw.

“Like every other party, Labour was given very specific legal advice from the council but deliberately chose to breach the bylaw. It’s very disappointing and only reflects poorly on them.”

Mr Brewer says Auckland Council CEO Doug McKay also wrote to political parties asking them to respect the Rugby World Cup and be sensitive to where they put signs up.

“By splashing red around the central city, Labour has ignored the council’s request to be sensitive around the Rugby World Cup. Aucklanders’ have gone to a lot of trouble to have the city looking its best and people won’t appreciate makeshift hoardings on the likes of Western Park, Ponsonby Road.

“The Mayor needs to tell his colleagues in the Labour Party to pull their heads in. Auckland residents and ratepayers deserve better. They have spent over $100m on this tournament and ensuring Auckland looks great.”

Cameron Brewer says people who are annoyed by signs up illegally today, or poorly placed given the Rugby World Cup, should report them to the council by phoning (09) 301-0101.

People, please phone the council. Regardless of your political affiliation, we do not want any party breaking the law. Because if we do it, you know where we end up: deep in debt or in jail. There won't be retroactive law changes for us.

There have been Tau Henare and Paula Bennett signs up in Waitakere for months now.

I can't believe some of you commenter are defending Labour on this! It's a clear breach of the rules, after they've received explicit advice on the law. This has nothing to do with missing out on hoarding sites (and even if it did, that's fair game because Labour got the "best ones" through breaking the law) and everything to do with which parties have respect for the council, the ratepayers and the rule of law. Labour are absolute disgrace. They've put signs up illegally and now it's radio silence in all channels weighting for the weekend to pass so when the Council wakes up on Monday they'll be nothing that can be done about it. This probably isn't as bad, on its own, as Labour's string of other electioneering breaches, but when viewed against Labour's long history of this it's just another cynical, disgraceful and arrogant move. I've heard the Council is removing some of the signs and fining Labour: I hope this is the case all throughout Auckland.

Come on.. this is a press release from Cameron Brewer of all people -- a National Party puppet - hardly a credible person to comment about election hoardings during a election campaign. This is a story that is merely the noise from an empty vessel frustrated that his candidate missed out on hoarding sites. Brewer should get over it and crawl back to having a holiday with his leader in Hawaii.

Why is it allowed to have the hoardings put up in place every where else in the country except for Auckland. For me Auckland and the council also the mayors can get stuffed also the rwc.Why is there a law made in Auckland just because the hoardings are RED if they were Blue nothing would be said about it.Also why do we have to pay for the roading rail etc when we dont even live up in the coconut land of Auckland. The City of crime, and run by those who pee on trees in parks.Cameron Brewer needs too pull his head in the Nat supporter.

Oh dear. Could the Nat. 'diddums' be spooked by the Horizon Poll out this week-end which reveals that the smaller parties could cause the election to go either way? So Brewer, a well known Nat-man, is trying to destabilise a very popular Jacinda Ardern by implying she is indulging in dirty little electoral rorts. I have seen quite a few Nat. Party bill boards around Auckland advertising Nat.Party MPs and they have been there for weeks. Good one Brewer. Accuse the other side of what you are 'guilty' of yourselves!

I live in Grey Lynn, and I won't be voting for any candidate who is selfish enough to break the rules in a World Cup important area. Sorry Labour, you lose.
