Labour Party MPs say there is no coup

Labour Party MPs say there is no coup

By Patrick Gower

Phil Goff was out today with the Labour Party faithful.

But it's actually Goff's back that's against the wall.

His handling of the Darren Hughes affair means he's been forced to answer questions about just how much faith his colleagues have really got.

“I've heard of no leadership concerns, nor any difference of opinion on the decisons that I've taken,” he says.

You can't just take Goff's word for that.

So we spoke to the key players in any move against him: Shane Jones, David Cunliffe, David Parker and Grant Robertson.

They were upfront - there is no coup.

“You're free to talk to any parliamentarians on the Labour side and get their own opinion they'll tell you for themselves,” says Goff.

So we did - privately.

And they said:

"I wouldn't say I'm on Phil's side but there's no one else."

"A few of the guys are rattled but not enough for a spill."

"Come on Bro - who would want that job?"

“There is no question about my leadership, there never has been except from my political opponents,” says Goff.

Former Australian Labour Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's in the country and he knows all about leadership coups.

So what's his advice?

“The first law of foreign policy is don't interfere in anyone else’s stuff,” he says

But he was prepared to break that to give his mate Phil a plug.

“He is a good person, I know that from my own experience. And I wish him well in the future,” he says.

Goff's other problem is Hughes' vacant party list spot – it’s due to go to Judith Tizard.

He views her as a figure from the past and doesn't want her back.

“It’s for seven months, for some that might be regarded as disruptive,” he says.

But Tizard is undecided - she's got unfinished business.

“I'd love to make a valedictory speech,” she says.

And if she does - she really will be disruptive.

“The question is whether Phil Goff is the person to lead New Zealand and he's got to capture New Zealand's imagination and for New Zealand to see him as an alternative,” she says.

And that's exactly what her potential colleagues won't say in public.

So who are you hiding behind that name cant fool?

I am not calling Glenn names, I am pointing out the reality of who he is... go search through previous stories on this site.. Glenn is a known beneficiary basher, a known woman hater and a known Maori basher.

Since when is telling the truth about someone name calling.

And the point is cant hide, all political leaders in the last three years have done exactly the same thing.. Rodney Hide with David Garrett, John key with Richard Worth and Paula bennett and Phil goff with huges.. although Hughes hasnt been charged with anything and you would think if the crime was serious enough the police investigation would have been more stringent with a quick arrest.

Jeez 'Jonathon', come up with a new line. Yes, both National & Labour tickle around the edges of token socialism - they have to, the people won't accept otherwise; but until someone has the balls to completely disown Rogernomics & re-write the State Owned Enterprises Act to include a true social mandate rather than be purely profit driven, neither are true socialist parties - just populist vote chasers. And what's with all the name calling & belittling? Defensive much? Bit scared the National boogeyman is going to take away the last little bit of your benefit? This isn't the schoolyard. If you had a decent argument to make you wouldn't have to call people 'redneck, uneducated and completely bigotted'. But no, you repeat the same tired old claptrap; you jump onto any issue and turn it round onto National/Paula Bennett/anything to distract from the actual issue under discussion; you point out how Key has mismanaged events in the past and then argue that makes it okay for Goff to mismanage events now. It doesn't. Goff has no-one to blame for his poor management of the affair than himself. Goff could have shown leadership & boosted his perceived integrity by fronting the issue weeks ago; instead he handed an opportunity to National to distract from what they were doing and put another nail in Labours coffin.

No-ones going to touch Phil Goff until Andrew Little becomes an MP. The party know they can't win the next election because its too divided at the moment. Once Andrew Little comes in its byby Goff and he knows it. He's not Prime Minister material, he was just a convenient scape goat to stop the infighting after Clarke and Cullen left from breaking up the party.

Glenn, i love people like you.. you refer to labour as socialists.. yet so are National.

You jump on beneficiary stories because you hate them so much, you do the same with women and you have a huge hatred of Maori.

you most certainly are a typical National party supporter.

And by the way, Paula bennett breached more than one persons right to privacy and none of them were found to be defrauding the system.

So seriously.. try a little truth.. so sick of your lies in every post you make.

We get that you are a National party redneck, uneducated and completely bigotted.

You need mental help pal, you and Brent post almost the exact same comments in stories.

I ask you--any one---who in their right mind, would invite someone like Judith Tizzard[after what she has said]to join them at the parliamentary benches? It would be akin to sleeping with a deadly snake.

Where do you get your news from?
I think that you must invent all these mythical threats to Goffs leadership, just to creat a sensation and a news item.

His party members on the other hand must be at this time strongly reasured by goffs steady, mature, loyal handling of the whole affair so far.

Dean and Jonathon i agree full heartedly with you!s.The difference between Key and Goff, Key lied and keeps on telling lies where Goff is straight up front on issues of concern.and the media likes to put the boot into Labor which is traitor ship. And say that Goff should resign,Why the hell should he?when Key did not resign over the same kind of issue. But the head lines were not over exploited with Key as it is for Goff.It would be a better world without the media making over exaggerated stories about one party. And a truthful politician running our country.
