Labour wants the National government to make mental health a priority following the release of suicide statistics.

Chief Coroner Judge Neil MacLean put out the figures for the 2010-2011 year - showing young men and Maori are most at risk.

The findings also show suicide in New Zealand has risen from 540 deaths annually in 2007/2008 to 558 in 2010/2011.

Labour's associate health spokesperson, Iain Lees-Galloway, says National has created a narrow set of political targets.

Mr Galloway says a number of DHBs have had budget cuts - while Non Government Organisations have had no funding increases for three years.

As a survivor of self harm, there are many factors involved in suicide.Less political, more genetic and life events. If you have a shit childhood or even adulthood, of course there is a chance of depression unless you have the right skills to deal with it.Some don't, for whatever reason.More real help must be given to these people, hands on as soon as they are identified as being in danger. The present system largely leaves people to themselves. The best that is offerred is a Crisis Team phone number to talk to, that may come and see you, a bit late when the impulse to depart arrives.

and people should stop expecting the govenrment to do everything for them.. its not nationals fault that people kill themselves... and if you are sick of being at low income get off your butt and make something of yourself.. dont diss the people that have bothered to get an education and make something of themselves... all these kids that drop out of school at 15 and younger (even though it is compulsory to be at school until 16) and i bet they are going to expect everything handed to them... and if you have no money dont have children because you can not look after them, dont expect the government to look after you, look after yourself... grow up new zealand!!

No they need to concentrate on the use of crak and get rid of it and start shooting people that deal and cook it then we wont have as many mental health problems... mental health in this country is hugely because of the drug problem... im 23 and most of my so called friends all have mental problems and its all thanks to the crak, e and acid trips..

No Chris, people are depressed and mentally ill because National has completely f****d people's chances of holding down a secure job, let alone finding one. Don't be surprised if the mental health stats have skyrocketed, because that's what capitalism does to people. In fact, the National party is full of people with sociopathic personality traits, that's why they don't give a f*** about the sick and disabled, and that's why I think the party, its policies and ideology and all pertaining opinions and views should subsequently be outlawed. All hell will break loose if invalids and the severely ill are forced to rot in the gutter because a few sociopaths with the means to make the critical decisions didn't want to pay for their support.

Great rant, Clarke! Mainly baseless rhetoric. How about a run down on Labour's nine years. We had all the same problems. And don't forget the people unfriendly Rogernomics on Labour's watch and massive asset sales. How come National is so popular at the moment?

The welfare socialist are to blame for NZ's poor mental health and suicide stats. 'Welfareism' creates long term unemployment, depression, substance abuse, crime, low self esteem and sense of alienation and hopelessness. The past Labour Govt.s esp. Helen Clarke's have blood on their hands.
'Clarke' that nasty socialist who writes disgusting comments represents nicely the sick moronic idealogy the left promote.
Roll on election night so the moronic left and their hatred will be silenced for many year's to come.
