The Highlanders decision to only use the new green jersey for away games is the right one, according to Labour MP Clare Curran.
The Dunedin South MP shot to infamy when she was ejected from the House for inappropriate attire, after protesting the changed strip by wearing the old blue Highlanders jersey.
That blue and gold jersey will now be used for home games and the green design as the away strip, a move the Highlanders board has admitted is a response to public backlash.
They still believe the team need to freshen up their look, but plan to consult with the community on designs for the 2013 jersey.
Ms Curran says the decision to use the blue jersey for home games shows the board are listening to fans, and have the guts to respond.
“The Highlanders are part of the proud tradition of Otago and Southland, 127 years of history can’t be tossed out overnight,” Ms Curran says.
“The Highlanders already have an identity. They’ve got a support base.
“There’s a compelling reason to retain the blue and gold of Otago, the maroon of Southland and the purple and gold of North Otago,” she says.
