Trevor Mallard is taking responsibility for the Labour Party leader's blunder in Parliament yesterday.

David Shearer went for the Prime Minister's jugular when he brought up a past quote, in an attempt to prove John Key's hypocrisy for not sacking John Banks.

But he missed by a mile - it turns out the quote was from National-leaning blogger David Farrar.

Mr Key had never uttered the words and David Shearer had to return to the House last night to apologise.

Mr Mallard this morning told RadioLIVE he was to blame.

"It's a terrible mistake and I take responsibility for that," says Mr Mallard, who still managed to get in a dig at the Prime Minister.

"We confused David Farrar with the Prime Minister – they both say the same things all the time, and the quotes got shuffled.

"I looked at the questions beforehand, I should have seen the difference."

you people are too hard on Shearer. There are two things that come out of this. 1. John Key admited to saying that when he agreed to Shearer that he had said that. 2. Shearer appologised for his mistake. That is good people.. yes a screw up but good for the admittion. I am liking Shearer more and more and Key less and less. If you think selling off assets is not one of the biggest bungles than you should stay away from pointed objects.

Nice to see Mallard and his master looking like clowns in their over enthusiasm to find fault with Key. For the last six months, I have not seen an iota of policy or statement of direction or what Labour would do differently. No wonder they are still not able to make any headway in the polls.

The quote from Key that Shearer should have said was in relation to the Winston Peters scandal over donations from Owen Glenn in 2008, When Key said... “Helen Clark must stand Mr Peters down as a Minister. That is what I would do if I were Prime Minister. Helen Clark has stood Ministers from Labour down for much less.”.. Its too bad that Key isn't a man of integrity. He is a hypocrite.

David Shearer needs to learn from this. He is quickly falling into the Labour habit of scraping the barrel, didn't work in the last 2 elections. Don't they learn? He's now as bad as Mallard. we did have hope that he would raise Labour's game.

Shambles. No wonder the knives are already sharpening behind Shearer, he gets given a gift - on a platter - to hammer the Govt with and he STILL manages to screw it up!
