John Key has ruled out selling Kiwibank while he's Prime Minister,

Labour's launching a campaign to ensure Kiwibank stays in New Zealand hands.

Leader David Shearer wants the Government to support a private members bill which he says will help keep it locally owned.

The bank is currently owned by New Zealand Post, which is a state-owned enterprise - and Mr Shearer says it's vulnerable to future asset sales.

"We felt that it was important that Kiwibank, which is an icon of New Zealand, is actually put into a situation where it would need three-quarters of Parliament to vote in favour of selling it before it would be able to be sold off, whether in whole or part."

John Key has ruled out selling Kiwibank while he's Prime Minister, and Mr Shearer says he should back that up by supporting Labour's bill.

@ paora my post is in reply to richard. Still thanking Labours foresightedness to try and keep kiwibank in nz hands. You would think by now national would have got the message on asset sales loud and clear but no they still have the sales in the pipeline and I thank the maori for their input to stop the first sale from proceding!

ALISON. You seem to be blogging on the wrong item. Racist? Facts when spelt out have nothing to do with racism, just saying things as they are. If you don't agree with any comments made, you are free to say so, as long as you point out where you differ and offer an alternative. As far as labour is concerned, it's all words from the opposition with nothing concrete for us to believe. We only have labour's history of actions to guide what we think.

Such racist bleating imploring the labour leader to show National the way out of the hole keys has dug. Yes labour sold assets and learnt the hard way. Nationals still trying to learn and making the biggest hash out of it anyone could. Good on labour for there preventing this asset to be sold when keys runs out of others.

It was a Labour administration that sold 100% of our Post Bank to the ANZ and now they flip flop to stop anything happening to Kiwi Bank under National. Nice one Labour, why should we trust you this time either?

When is Labour going to do anything useful instead of sniping? If Labour really wants to gain some respect they should be supporting National at the moment, as love or hate asset sales we have the situation where the government is being held to ransom by the Maori party and the Treaty Gravy Train sham. Surely Shearer can see that? If Labour becomes government does he want to inherit a country where unelected groups of people call the shots? Time to grow up Labour and face this nonsense head on with National, and sort it before it gets totally out of control. Sadly many voters believe it already is.
