Labour is warning against a gambling law change as discussions between SkyCity and the government gain momentum.
Six months ago, SkyCity proposed to build a multi-million dollar convention centre in return for it being allowed to increase the number of gaming tables and pokie machines in its casino.
It has been confirmed negotiations will be ramped up in the coming months.
Labour's Phil Twyford says it is a raw deal for taxpayers.
“We’re particularly concerned, the whole area of gambling is a real concern to the community. It’s something that as a country we should take a view on and regulate accordingly. To sell that kind of regulation and law making down the river just leaves a really bad taste in the mouth,” says Mr Twyford.
He says cheque book legislation is not the Kiwi way.
