Labour plans to build 100,000 homes

Labour's plan to build 100,000 houses selling at about $300,000 each is a fantasy, Prime Minister John Key says.

The flagship policy was announced at Labour's annual conference and is the party's answer to the affordable housing crisis.

The Government is going to build 6000 homes with 600 of them selling for less than $400,000 at Hobsonville in Auckland.

Mr Key says Labour won't be able to deliver, particularly in Auckland where the affordability problem is much worse than anywhere else.

"They would have to be very, very small or a hell of a long way away," he said.

"This stuff is fantasy land."

Labour leader David Shearer yesterday showed off two Auckland subdivisions – built by a charity – containing $300,000 homes. Labour says the sections cost about $50,000.

But property developer Olly Newland says they're "dreaming", and it simply isn't possible to bulk buy cheap land in Auckland.

“I don't know where you can get land for $50,000 – possibly in Mosgiel out of Dunedin.

“I think it will cost five times as much, it would be cheaper to buy 100,000 caravans.”

Under Labour's plan,  construction costs would make up $220,000-250,000, leaving just $50,000-$80,000 for the section.

In the lead-up to last years' election National promised to all and sundry a "Brighter Future".This same PM claimed there are no toilets on "Planet Key".He also claimed absolutely no knowledge of Kim Dotcom who happens to live in the same electorate he supposedly is MP of and helped Key's mate Banksie in Banksie failed attempt to be returned another term as a free-loading,self-serving mayor of super-city Auckland. And time after a fire-work display in Auckland harbour Key still 'had never heard' of Kim Dotcom?Come on.What has the guy(Key)been smoking over the years? He claims unemployment is "not that bad" as the stats say.He claims NZ is the only country that doesn't dislike the US(as stated on a David Letterman show).Key has reduced himself to a little world of make believe that only him and his supporters thinks exists but in reality it's just fantasy on his part. And this ostrich(called Key)thinks this National government and him are as pure as the driven snow! You kind of wonder what other stupid and senseless comments our overpaid PM will say next?!

What amazes me is Key slagging off anyone for getting it wrong. What happened to dotcom?. What happened over ACC?. What happened to the proposed budget surplus?. What happened with Winz?. What happened with the whole I know nothing about the BMW's. National have shown they can get it no more right than labour can. So these people thinking Key knows what he is talking about just need to reference all of his mulitiudes of errors.

It is amusing to see the clueless Key and National slagging off any worthwhile plans just because it is proposed by the opposition! The ONLY policies that Key, Nats and ACT have are there for the primary benefit of the wealthy! Good on Mr Shearer and the Labour Party for trying to find a solution to the huge housing problem and to help the first home buyers. I support the initiative wholeheartedly. Early days yet.

Who advises Shearer on these policies? as they need sacking. Shearer does not help himself either he comes across as a bumbling idiot devoid of facts. This housing policy is unworkable and poorly thought out. Labour really needs to address their leadership, sort out their deep divisions and future policy directions.
Being concerned with gay marriages and 50% females on committees and boards is irrelevant in the big picture and does not win elections.

As stated in previous comments the Housing for Humanity manage and this is just one way of doing it. Maybe our narrow minded Nats need to get their thinking caps on and think. Not everything has to be about profit but decent cheap homes is still guaranteed money savings for the govt with less money spent on ill health etc.

Like everything Labour does. No thought or proper investigation to back up their claims. I can see now why Labour do not come up with many policies and prefer to just slam anything and everything that National does. A real pity because we do need a strong opposition and an alternative to a National government. At this stage our only option is National because as Labour has proved, they are not able to run a conference, yet alone a country.
