The Taite Prize of Outstanding Album of the Year was awarded to Ladi 6 in Auckland tonight, for their album, The Liberation of…

The award is named after late music journalist, Dylan Taite, who contributed to Nightline amongst other shows in his distinguished career.

"Being associated with the Taite name and Dylan Taite being the dude, who is like 'I listen to stuff you hate,' it makes us proud to be music that's not so commercially viable but very, very cool," says Ladi 6's Karoline Tamati.

But the duo behind the album, judged the year's most creative and artistically excellent, say it wouldn't have been possible if they hadn't up sticks and moved to Berlin.

"When you're over there in a country where they don't speak English and they appreciate your music, you get a sense of 'ah we might be onto something,'" Tamati says.

And the pull of the continent is strong. Ladi 6 couldn't make tonight's award ceremony because she has a gig in Paris tomorrow night.
