New Zealand born singer Ladyhawke has won two Australian Music Awards despite controversy over her nominations.

Ladyhawke, whose real name is Phillipa Brown, caused a stir after she was nominated for five ARIA awards.

The singer grew up in Masterton, and now lives in London, but qualified for the awards because she lived in Australia for four years.

She won breakthrough album and breakthrough single for the song ‘My Delirium’ at Sydney's Acer Arena last night.

The singer says she's excited to be recognised for her first solo album.

"I wanted to write exactly the sort of music I would want to listen to myself," she said.

I still don't know how this works. Their own eligibility criteria says she doesn't qualify. http://www.ariaawards.com.au/about-eligibility-criteria.php All entered Artists must be: (a) Australian Citizens (by birth or citizenship), OR (b) Persons with eligible product who have gained or applied for permanent residency in Australia and who have resided in Australia for six months during the eligibility period, AND (c) In the case of groups, a minimum of 50% of the group must qualify under 3(a) and/or 3(b) above.
