I remember living in Wainuiomata back in the 1960s and seeing gorse fires in the hills next to houses so nothing has changed in 40 plus years. If they want to prevent these fires perhaps they should use prisioners to clear the gorse for once and for all

When they say "bush" do they mean gorse - a good time perhaps to plant some nice pine trees?

Certainly not expecting to get woken up with cry's of fire this morning! Evacuated at 2:30 am, high flames - helicopter dropping buckets of water now. Fire has moved onto second ridge line and advancing south through scrub, Owhiro Bay school open and providing welcome support for those displaced
