The last lot of New Zealand soldiers to be sent on a six-month deployment to Afghanistan are set to leave Christchurch today.

The contingent will be the 21st rotation in the provincial reconstruction team based in the Bamiyan province since New Zealand joined the US-led invasion.

They will be farewelled later this morning from Burnham Military Camp.

The Government announced earlier this month the Provincial Reconstruction Team would be withdrawn from Afganistan by the end of April.

Ten New Zealand soldiers and thousands of Afghan civilians have been killed in the 11 year war.
