Criminal defence lawyers opposing the Government changes to legal aid are considering a work-to-rule.

Barristers argue there is an erosion of access to justice, as more of their contract work goes to salaried staff of the Public Defence Service, Radio New Zealand reported.

They are also angry that people facing less serious charges like burglary are now unable to choose their legal aid lawyer.

Lawyers have formed a lobby group and are trying to get the Public Defence Services share of the work reduced from 50 percent to the 33 percent threshold they say they were first told of.
