More than 800km off the east coast of the South Island lies a mysterious land with a population of just over 600.

The Chatham Islands is a place two actors have decided Kiwis don't know enough about, so they travelled there to learn more - and have created a new play about their adventures.

"Going there we were wondering what we should do when we get there," says Johnny Moffat, "and we were talking to Val, the owner of Hotel Chathams, and we were like, 'Should we organise some kind of itinerary to try to make the most of our time?' and he goes, 'Nah mate, just get there, check in, go to the pub and it'll sort itself out, mate.'"
