"the GST take on petrol and diesel has never been higher"

Why do people insist on remaining ignorant? The GST take is not higher when the price of petrol goes up. People either spend the same amount on petrol (but fewer litres, meaning a lower take from excise) in which case the government actually gets less money. Or they spend more money on the same number of litres which gives the government the same amount of excise and the same amount of GST as before. Yes, the same amount - because people have less money to spend on other things, people will not spend money other things so the government loses GST on the other things people might have bought if petrol weren't so expensive.

And don't forget the government has to buy fuel as well. It doesn't benefit from higher petrol prices. With a smaller tax take, it's only fair that the heavy users pick up some slack. The truckies are saying that it's you and me, light or normal users of the roads, that should pick up the slack and not them, the heavy users. Someone, unfortunately, will have to pay more if we want to keep the roads up to a good standard.

GO THE TRUCKIES
For some reason, I just cant believe Annette King's excuses.....the GST take on petrol and diesel has never been higher, where is it going? Historically a lot of the taxes from fuel have gone into the consolidated fund....now Annette King and the Greens are making it sound like truckers are leaches on society not paying their way. Their timing couldnt have been better for losing an election though!
