Today marks the start of the biggest shake-up in the legal aid system in a decade.
It will now be harder for some to access legal aid and so-called dodgy lawyers will be brought into line.
The changes were sparked by a 2010 report into the system by Dame Margarette Bazley, which identified up to 200 lawyers allegedly ripping off the taxpayer-funded system.
But barrister Russell Fairbrother says it focussed too much on one particular area of the country.
“I think if she’d done a survey throughout the country, in provinces and other cities outside of Auckland, she’d be pleasantly surprised,” he says.
The Government is also expanding the Ministry of Justice’s Public Defence Service, which employs salaried lawyers.
